The importance of snow removal

More snow today and more shoveling. In our part of the world it is very, VERY important to keep your sidewalks clean. We all have our little stock of salt to help with this process.
There are a lot of elderly people in our town and they are always out - rain or shine, snow or sleet - getting their exercise. So yes, we keep those sidewalks clean. As you can see from this picture there are even some Germans who are negligent with this cleaning system. This sidewalk "belongs" to the apartment building on the corner and no one there ever takes responsibility for it. I'm not sure how they can get away with that in this country when you are almost always told when you're in the wrong.
For us that also means cleaning a strip down the alley that our property borders. When it snows a lot, like it has this week, it's a bit of a job to keep everything free from ice and snow. A few years ago we hadn't done our job very well and an elderly lady actually came to our door and told us that the alley was "Spiegel glatt" - as smooth as glass. So Howard dashed out and solved that problem quickly with several handfuls of salt.

...being told when you are in the wrong? Maybe I'd fit right in there in Germany, I seem to be so good at the telling part. Least I think so.
